Love Lines refers to the different paths that love can lead us. In this program,
the themes of true love, tough love and questionable love are explored.
First on the program exploring the theme of true love is Romeo and Juliet Suite with
music by Sergei Prokofiev. Choreographed by NEAD Director Giuseppe Canale, the suite is a section out
of the full length ballet. It introduces the audience to the major characters of Shakespeare’s play and
depicts the two major players as they fall in love. The work features guest student Gabrielle Johnson from ABT’s JKO
School as Juliet, along with NEAD students and other local guest artists. Sets, scenery and choreography are not to be missed in this
spectacular production!
Second on the program is NEAD Director Scott Heinrich’s look at tough love in a presentation ofThe Carnival of the Animals
with the familiar music of Camille Saint-Saens. Helped out by writers from The Mid-Michigan Writers Association, and
narrated by a very frustrated teacher played by Penny Zacharias, a play unfolds as she regains control of the “animals”
in her class room. This is the first time in which NEAD’s younger students are featured in their very own production!
The final work of the evening is Heinrich’s vision of the opera Bluebeard’s Castle by Bela Bartok, sung in its original
Hungarian. The work features NEAD students Kula Batangan and Carrie Tait as the opera’s sole characters,
Bluebeard and his new wife Judith. As Judith digs into Bluebeard’s past, a slow and steady unraveling
of their relationship begins. Just who is the villain in this story?
Audience members must decide in this psychological thriller!
